Why Retiring in San Fulgencio Could Be the Best Decision of Your Life

Why Retiring in San Fulgencio Could Be the Best Decision of Your Life
29 May 2025

When the idea of retirement in Spain comes up, names like Torrevieja or Benidorm usually steal the spotlight. But tucked quietly between the orange groves and coastal dunes is San Fulgencio, a tranquil village offering a slower, more fulfilling way of life.   This small inland town is only 10 minutes from La Marina beach and 30 minutes from Alicante airport — making it ideal for retirees who want the best of both worlds: access to the sea without the noise of a tourist hotspot.

1. Serenity with a Sense of Belonging

San Fulgencio offers that rare combination of peace and connection. You’ll find small cafés, weekly street markets, and neighbours who greet you by name — many of whom are fellow Irish or British expats.   Homes here are often spacious, single-storey villas, with private gardens, terraces, and plenty of sunshine. Most are priced far below Ireland’s market.

2. Healthcare, Safety and Community

There are multiple clinics and pharmacies nearby, and the nearest hospital is just 15 minutes away in Elche. The town also has a local police station, public transport to coastal towns, and plenty of community-led activities, including Irish pub nights and walking clubs.

3. Home is Just a Flight Away

Direct flights from Ireland to Alicante run year-round, with low-cost options ideal for family visits. Most residents say they feel close to home — but without the grey skies.

Tourist Tip:

Visit in early October for the Virgen del Rosario Festival, a colourful week of parades, fireworks and traditional music that transforms this peaceful town into a vibrant celebration of Spanish culture.
