Best walking routes of the Costa Blanca - Laguna de la Mata

Nestled in the heart of Alicante's Vega Baja region, the Laguna de la Mata forms a significant part of the Parque Natural de las Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja. 

This protected area spans over 3,700 hectares and encompasses two saltwater lagoons: the green-hued Laguna de la Mata and the pink-tinted Laguna de Torrevieja. Established as a natural park in 1994, it serves as a sanctuary for diverse flora and fauna, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts and hikers alike. 

Exploring the Walking Trails

The park offers a variety of walking trails that cater to different fitness levels, each providing unique perspectives of the lagoons and their surroundings. Here are some notable routes:

1. Circular Route around Laguna de la Mata: This easy 16.4 km loop trail offers a comprehensive view of the lagoon's diverse ecosystems. The flat terrain makes it accessible for families and casual walkers. Along the way, hikers can enjoy bird-watching spots and rest areas.  
2. La Mata Nature Reserve Circular: Spanning approximately 8.5 km, this mostly flat circular walk traverses rough ground and sandy patches. Hikers are treated to expansive views of the lake and its vibrant birdlife. 
3. Laguna de la Mata - La Pineda - Cañada de Alarcón: A moderate 5.6 km trail that combines lagoon views with stretches through aromatic pine forests, offering a varied hiking experience. 

Flora and Fauna Highlights

The park is renowned for its rich biodiversity. Bird enthusiasts can spot species such as flamingos, grebes, and avocets, especially during migratory seasons. The surrounding vegetation includes Mediterranean scrub, salt-tolerant plants, and pine groves, creating a mosaic of habitats that support a variety of wildlife. 

Visitor Information

For those planning a visit, the park's Interpretation Center provides insightful exhibits about the area’s ecological significance and offers guided tours. It’s advisable to check the local weather and trail conditions before setting out, and always carry sufficient water, especially during warmer months. 

The Centro de Interpretación del Parque Natural de La Mata (La Mata Natural Park Visitor Centre) is situated in the historic Casa Forestal in the La Mata district of Torrevieja. It’s approximately 400 meters from the N-332 Alicante–Cartagena road at kilometer marker 64.5. Access is via an asphalted road from the N-332.
