Free building plots for young people in Benijofar
Finding a home to rent or buy has become a real headache — especially if you’re young. In Benijófar, with its soaring property prices, it can feel almost impossible.
This small town of just over 3,400 people in the Vega Baja has seen huge growth over the past few decades. Most land is already built up, surrounded by traditional farmland, and houses often cost around €350,000, aimed at well-off Central European buyers. In fact, about half the population is foreign, with residents from the UK, Netherlands, Belgium, Norway and Germany, plus many seasonal visitors.
A Clever Solution for Young People
To help, Mayor Luis Rodríguez has come up with an exciting plan. The Town Hall is offering a 4,300-square-metre plot — completely free for young residents — to be divided into 30 small parcels.
Residents who qualify (under 40 and registered in Benijófar) will build their own homes, following simple design rules so the area looks neat and harmonious. Each house, a ground floor plus one level, is expected to cost about €150,000, a bargain compared to nearby homes that sell for hundreds of thousands more.
As the Mayor puts it: “This plot is in a prime location, right in the centre of town. While homes across the street cost €350,000, we’re giving the land to young people for free.”
Public Housing Through Plan Vive
On top of that, Benijófar is joining the Plan Vive Comunitat Valenciana. Another plot of almost 1,900 square metres has been handed over to the EVHA, with plans for 30 public housing units. These will be built by private developers in collaboration with the government and offered as affordable rental homes, helping tackle the widespread housing shortage.
This initiative shows that, with a mix of community planning, public land and private expertise, Benijófar is trying to make housing more accessible for locals without compromising the town’s character.
What This Means for Residents
Young people now have a real chance to stay in the town, build their own home and be part of a new, vibrant neighbourhood — all while keeping costs manageable. For the rest of the community, it’s a step towards a more inclusive and sustainable Benijófar, with housing options for everyone, not just those who can afford a luxury villa.
